Dr Abdullahi Usman Bello, FCCA, CFE, Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau, while speaking at a Conference organised by CHATHAM HOUSE on the 19th of March emphasized the need for accountability and integrity in public office.
While speaking at a panel session, Dr Bello announced plans to charge and confiscate assets from public servants who cannot satisfactorily explain the origins of their declared assets. He highlighted the Bureau’s readiness to investigate these declarations and its proactive stance against corruption, including enhanced monitoring of public officers at the Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Dr Bello highlighted the importance of supporting anti-corruption agencies, acknowledging the support the Bureau has enjoined from the present administration, which will positively impact the operations of the Bureau.
Participants at the conference shared their experiences with corruption and stressed the need for immediate action to protect whistleblowers, leverage technology, and promote integrity. They called for the strengthening of anti-corruption institutions, addressing overlapping mandates, and engaging citizens in the fight against corruption.
